The Fun Of It All

It's 6:30pm - students are arriving. The air is full of excitement and anticipation - for students and teachers. Some have experience with clay, some have none. We prefer none. It's easier to teach than to break habits.

We teach our method of turning - one that Jack developed over the past twenty plus years. JS Pottery has produced pottery for twenty two years. We only began classes in 2001. Our customers had urged us to teach for many years.

Our objective is to give the student what he or she expects from a class. Some are serious about potting; some just want to get a feel for from where pottery evolves. They already have a deep interest in the finished ware.

Classes run for two and a half hours one night a week. The room stays full of activity - many sounds...some of delight, some of disappointment and aggravation. There is always laughter.

There are many ways to make a pot, we teach ours. Hopefully, we will be able to teach our students to make a pot and then make a similar pot and so on. We want them to know why they do movements that cause the pottery magic.

Plop and whir-the feel of clay as it thumps you around for those first few seconds, and then begins to calm and settle. There is a setting up of the clay before you begin to open and prepare the bottom. Pressure applied both inside and out causes the first rising of the clay. There is truly magic in the feel of a good pull.

The clay seems to jump to life between your hands. Your own imagination is your only limitation.

Course Layout
Wheel turned pottery classes consist of a 5 week course that lasts for 2 1/2 hours per session. One session per week.

Cost
$150 per course. This includes a 25 pound bag of clay.
